If a cab is destroyed on a tech, and there are no more Control Blocks or active anchors attached to the tech, it will no longer act as an entity and its blocks will fall apart. They also include basic weapons, a very simple navigational aid, and basic fuel reserve for booster use. When not connected to any other blocks, all defalt cabs will animate to reveal wheels or hover-drives to allow them to travel on their own. Player-control can be swapped between techs with cabs though using the right-click radial menu or with a double-left click. Cabs are necessary to toggle anchors and swap techs, as both can be done only while the tech is currently controlled. Cabs are arguably the most useful of all these, as it allows the tech to respond to player input when the tech is currently being controlled.
